Ida B. Wells-Barnett & Susan B. Anthony are two notable figures when discussing women's suffrage and anti-slavery efforts; however, Wells-Barnett and Anthony were more than contemporaries, they were friends as well. In Well-Barnett's autobiography, she refers to Anthony as her "dear good friend" while retelling a conversation they had about efforts to organize a suffrage group (wttw). Their friendship was solidified enough that Wells-Barnett was able to call out Anthony for being misguided in some of her decisions regarding the suffrage efforts of Black women in the South. Yet, they were still able to work together to make advances for all women in America.
View the resources on this guide to learn more about how their efforts worked to help the women's suffrage movement across the country, especially in the South where tensions were heightened. These resources also look at anti-slavery efforts that were taken by the pair during this time period.
