Info for Online Students: Policy for Online Students

Online Distance Learners       

The Fr. Leonard Alvey Library staff aims to support the research needs of distance learners enrolled in online or off-campus courses offered by Brescia University.  Distance learners are recognized as those students who cannot come to campus.  Faculty and students involved in distance education are encouraged to contact the library staff for assistance with any information needs or library services.

Eligibility

Students eligible to receive the following services must be currently enrolled in an online or off-campus class at Brescia University and not be currently enrolled in any classes held on the Brescia University campus.

Library Support Services

Communication/Reference Assistance

  • Regular announcements of library services, changes, etc. are provided via Brescia email accessible to all Brescia students.
  • Reference services may be obtained by calling the library main desk, 270-686-4212, or email at e-reference@brescia.edu.
  • From the library webpage connect to the librarians through: Help Me chat (available the hours the library is open), Text to 270-681-3911, and/or Ask a Librarian under About that links to questions already answered and displays the links to email, text, and chat.

Accessing print materials

To borrow materials from the Fr. Leonard Alvey Library:

  • Library owned materials will be shipped to you if you pay the cost of returning the material to the library. 
  • Procedure is as follows:
  • Contact the interlibrary loan department by phone at 270-686-4214 or by email at illoan@brescia.edu for books.
  • Lost book billing will be charged to student for materials not returned by the end of the semester.  You will be billed for failure to return items in good condition.

Obtaining photocopies of journal articles

  • Articles from print library owned periodicals (journals, magazines and newspapers) will be emailed to distance learners.
  • Articles from periodicals not owned by the library may be requested via interlibrary loan and will be emailed within two to three weeks.
  • Contact the interlibrary loan department by phone at 270-686-4214 or by email at illoan@brescia.edu to request periodical materials through interlibrary loan.

Borrowing from your local library

  • Library materials (books and journal articles) can be obtained through your local library.
  • Request Fr. Leonard Alvey Library owned materials through Interlibrary Loan at your local library.

Instruction for using library resources

  • A one hour credit online library course, Information Resources, is offered twice each semester.  This course covers the use of the online catalog and the electronic databases subscribed to by the library. Additionally, a three hour credit online library course, Advanced Library Resources, is also offered each semester.
  • An information session updating current library resources for faculty teaching online courses will be offered each semester.

Available Kentucky Library Services

In addition to the services provided by the Fr. Leonard Alvey Library, students have borrowing privileges at many Kentucky Academic Libraries due to Brescia’s membership in FoKAL (Federation of Kentucky Academic Libraries). Students must show a current Brescia ID card and an identification card (driver’s license) to take advantage of this service.
