While digital preservation has been applied to a diverse range of materials across the full range of scholarly disciplines, its value for primary linguistic data gathered by anthropologists in the form of audio and video field recordings is less known. A joint project of the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies and the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection at the University of Texas at Austin, the Archive of the Indigenous Languages of Latin America (AILLA) provides free access to a body of original historical linguistic data preserved digitally from original fragile formats.
